Character Breakdowns for Anastasia

ANYA

  • Playing Age: Mid-late 20s.

  • Lead role. Star Vehicle.

  • Female Presenting

  • Vocal Range: G3-F5, mixed-belt to D5. 

  • Dance Requirement: Strong mover, some dancing.

  • Anya has spent years finding out who she is. Suffering from amnesia, all Anya knows is that something awaits for her in Paris. She is fiery, driven, but deeply insecure, with a great capacity for love. 

 

DMITRY SUDAYEV

  • Playing age: mid-late 20s

  • Lead role

  • Male Presenting

  • Range: A2-A4.

  • Dance Requirement: Strong mover, some dancing.

  • Dmitry is a street orphan turned conman. He can charm his way out of any situation, both good and bad. Under his harsh exterior is a kind and considerate man, trying to overcome his current circumstances and survive.

 

VLADIMIR “VLAD” POPOV

  • Playing age: late 30s-50s

  • Supporting Lead role

  • Male Presenting

  • Range: A2-F4.

  • Dance Requirement: Strong mover, some dancing.

  • If there's a room full of important people, Vlad either knows them or can convince them he does. Wildly unserious, with a heart of gold, Vlad sees the potential in Anya.

 

GLEB VAGANOV

  • Playing age: mid-late 20s

  • Supporting Lead role

  • Male Presenting

  • Range: A2-Gb4.

  • A product of the Revolution, Gleb sees the world in black and white. That is, until he meets Anya and must decide what is more important: What he has been taught to believe, or what he feels deep inside.

 

DOWAGER EMPRESS MARIA FEODORVNA ROMANOV

  • Playing age: 60s-80s

  • Supporting role

  • Female Presenting

  • Range: F3-Bb4.

  • The Dowager Empress was once strongwilled and compassionate, but after the murder of her family she has grown harsh and cold. She wants to believe Anastasia is still alive, but that hope is fading.

 

COUNTESS LILY MALEVSKY-MALEVITCH

  • Playing age: late 30s-50s

  • Supporting role

  • Female Presenting

  • Range: G3-C5

  • Dance Requirement: Strong Dancer

  • Lily is loud, boisterous and always the life of the party. But that doesn’t prevent her from doing her duty as one of the Dowager Empress’ last ladies-in-waiting. She once had a love affair with Vlad.

 

LITTLE ANASTASIA

  • Playing age: 5-10

  • Featured role

  • Female Presenting

  • Range: C4-C5

  • Dance Requirement: Very little.

  • Little Anastasia is strong-willed and fearless. She is especially close with her Grandmother, the Dowager Empress

 

ALEXEI ROMANOV

  • Playing Age: 8-13 (pre-voice change)

  • Featured role

  • Male Presenting

  • Alexei was the little brother and best friend of Anastasia. He was killed in the Bolshevik Revolution and exists in the show mainly as a ghost/distant memory to Anya

 

TSAR NICHOLAS II

  • Playing Age: 30s-50s

  • Featured role

  • Male Presenting

  • The Tsar of all Russia and father to Anastasia. A loving father, but not the strongest leader. He was killed in the Bolshevik Revolution and exists in the show mainly as a ghost/distant memory to Anya. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

TSARINA ALEXANDRA

  • Playing Age: 30s-50s

  • Featured role

  • Female Presenting

  • Wife to Tsar Nicholas and mother to Anastasia. She’s strict and firm, and has a strong distaste for her Mother-in-Law, the Dowager Empress. She was killed in the Bolshevik Revolution and exists in the show mainly as a ghost/distant memory to Anya. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

MARFA

  • Playing Age: Any

  • Featured role

  • Female Presenting

  • One of the girls auditioning to be the next Anastasia. She’s “not really an actress” and the leader of the group. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

PAULINA

  • Playing Age: Any

  • Featured role

  • Female Presenting

  • One of the girls auditioning to be the next Anastasia. Of the group, she has the biggest attitude. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

DUNYA

  • Playing Age: Any

  • Featured role

  • Female Presenting

  • One of the girls auditioning to be the next Anastasia. Moral backbone of the group. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

COUNT IPOLITOV

  • Playing Age: Any 

  • Featured role

  • Male Presenting

  • Range: Bb2 - Eb4

  • Meets Anya, Vlad and Dmitry at the Train Station. He’s an aristocrat and an intellectual. “A dead man on both accounts.” Fleeing Russia to save himself, but will not make it. Deeply sentimental, but tortured. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

COMMISSIONER GORLINKSY 

  • Playing Age: ANY

  • Featured role

  • Male Presenting

  • Range: F3-Eb4

  • Gleb’s superior. Orders Gleb to bring Anya back to Russia, dead or alive. Harsh and ruthless. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

COUNT LEOPOLD

  • Playing Age: Any

  • Featured role

  • Male Presenting

  • Range: F3-Db4

  • Leopold is like a viper, ready to drain the Dowager Empress of the Romanov fortune (he’s next in line after all). He’s a garish fop, and larger than life. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

COUNT GREGORY

  • Playing Age: Any

  • Featured Role

  • Male Presenting

  • An escaped aristocrat from Russia. He is a frequent visitor of the Neva Club and a connoisseur of the ballet, as long as it has “real Russian music.” Will also double in the ensemble.

 

COUNTESS GREGORY

  • Playing Age: Any

  • Featured role

  • Female Presenting

  • Wife to Count Gregory, she enjoys the same material possessions as her husband. Regal, refined, and always looking for a chance to improve her status. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

SERGEI

  • Playing Age: Any

  • Featured Role

  • Male Presenting

  • Doorman for the Neva Club. Always willing to help a fellow comrade out. Will also double in the ensemble.

 

ENSEMBLE

  • Playing Age: Any

  • Will play various roles: Petersburg Citizens, Russian Servants, Ballet Guests, Parisians, Train Car Passengers, etc. 

 

DANCERS

  • Playing Age: Any

  • Will play the Romanov sisters (Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Teen Anastasia), Russian Cadets, Swan Lake Ballet Dancers (Odette, Cygnets, Von Rathbart, Prince Siegfried) , members of the Neva Club Staff and Parisians. The dancer playing Odetter will need to be able to dance en pointe.
